Scholarships

The Communication Department offers a number of merit scholarships for exceptional students in the department. Many of these are funded by the generosity of alumni and friends of the department. Applications for these scholarships are available at the department office in Walker Hall. Details about each scholarship can be found below. Deadlines for application will be listed below when determined, as well as announced on the departmental news site.

Students interested in applying for these scholarships are also encouraged to contact Dr. Jean DeHart (120 Walker Hall, 262-2402) for more information.

Appalachian South Appartments Scholarship (awarded to one student)
Requirements 1. Rising junior or senior
2. Communication major
3. Full-time student (12 hours).
Application Deadline Feb. 16, 2009
Notes

Thanks to a very generous donation from Appalachian South Apartments, we are able to offer one Communication major a free apartment, including utilities, beginning June 1, 2009.

To qualify, an applicant must be a rising Junior or Senior majoring in any area of Communication and be a full-time student for the academic year 2009-10.

To apply for this scholarship opportunity, please submit:

  1. A resume
  2. Name and contact information for at least one previous landlord
  3. The names of two Communication faculty who would be willing to serve as a reference for you. (They do not need to write a letter.)
  4. An essay that explains why you believe you are a good candidate for this scholarship and what having the scholarship would mean to you.
  5. A signed statement that gives the Department of Communication Scholarship Committee permission to receive information about your financial need from the Financial Aid office.

The Beasley Scholarship (available for one or more students)
Requirements: 1. You must be/intend to be an electonic media/broadcast major.
2. You must file for financial aid. Check with Financial Aid office in Thomas Bldg. for deadline information.
3. Preference is given to candidates from Patrick County, VA; Surry County, NC; and Mount Airy, NC. Other candidates will be considered if no one from these areas qualifies.
4. You must be a full-time student (12 hours).

Application Procedure A complete application consists of:
1. A resume.
2. At least two letters of reference.
3. A 500- to 1,000-word essay describing in detail the experiences in your life -- whether academic or nonacademic -- which have led to your career goal and/or your intended major.
4. An interview may be required.

The Charles E. Porterfield Scholarship (awarded to one student)
Requirements 1. Communication major
2. Finished sophomore year.
3. Minimum 3.0 GPA.
4. Demonstrated financial need.
5. Full-time student (12 hours).

The Carol J. Hughes Memorial Scholarship for Communication (awarded to one student)
Requirements 1. Rising senior
2. Communication major
3. Minimum 3.0 GPA
4. Full-time student (12 hours)
5. Must be involved in at least two ASU-sponsored extracurricular activities - one of which must be of nonacademic sponsorship

The Golden & Stella Choi Scholarship (awarded to one student)
Requirements

1. Preference given to Journalism or EM/B
2. Asian-American & international students encouraged to apply
3. Minimum 3.0 GPA.
4. Full-time student (12 hours).

The Joe S. Epley Scholarship (awarded to one student)
Requirements 1. PR major
2. Finished sophomore year.
3. Minimum 3.0 GPA.
4. Demonstrated financial need.

Requirements 1. Communication major
