Education
Dodd became a reporter for the Washington County News in
Abingdon, VA at the age of 17, while a high school senior. She
continued reporting and writing editorials for that newspaper
during summers while in college.
After completing her master's degree, she became a national award
winning reporter for WRVA Radio in Richmond, VA and from there
started teaching courses at the University of Richmond. During that
time, she free-lanced television documentaries and scripts for PBS.
Dodd discovered teaching as her passion and transferred across town
to Virginia Commonwealth University. There she moved from adjunct
to assistant to associate professor to director of the School of
Mass Communications by 1994.
While director of the mass comm school at VCU, she assembled an
international advisory board and worked with the university
advancement office to raise more than $2 million in donations and
in-kind gifts to benefit the school's undergraduate and master's
students.
After 19 years at VCU, Dodd decided to return to the professional
world and became an editor for the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
From there, she moved back to Southwest Virginia for family reasons
and worked as Director of Major Gifts for Emory & Henry College.
In 2002, she accepted Virginia 9th District Congressman Rick
Boucher's invitation to manage his campaign for reelection.
Following his reelection to an 11th term in office, Dodd accepted
an offer to teach communications again--this time at the
Appalachian State University in North Carolina.
She writes for Baconsrebellion.com in Richmond, a web magazine that
analyzes economic, environmental, transportation and political
issues in Virginia.
Following the 2004 untimely death of her baby brother from Lou
Gehrig's disease, Dodd travels and spends down time with her family
and friends. She is committed to raising national awareness about
fatal neurological diseases and the critical importance of funding
and finding a cure for them.
